‘I liked what Deepika (Padukone) did in ‘Cocktail’ and ‘Chennai Express’: Madhuri Dixit

Madhuri, however, feels women now have a bigger say in the industry compared to earlier times.

“There was a time in films when I never saw a female assistant director, camera person or make-up person. There were very few women directors who you could count on your fingers. Now there are so many women working in different aspects of filmmaking. There are talented women directors like Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti. The sensibilities are changing,” the actress said.

Madhuri also credits new age directors for thinking beyond stereotypes when it comes to female performers.

“The new age directors see women in a different light and write good roles for women. They are no longer caricatures of say an avenger, a victim, or an eye candy. They are people, they are characters.

“What is amazing is that this is happening in mainstream. I liked what Deepika (Padukone) did in ‘Cocktail’ and ‘Chennai Express’. I like this change and I think it is in the right direction,” she said.

A source says, “Deepika was shooting for her film for more than 15 hours and instead of calling it a day, she headed straight from the set to the venue of the awards function. In fact, she had to reach early as she was also performing at the event.

Not only she did perform but she also made it a point to rehearse for it before the final performance was recorded.”

The rigorous schedule notwithstanding, the actress apparently had no complaints as she came on stage to collect the two awards that she won. “Deepika did not say a word about her long day even though she looked a little tired and felt low. For her, completing her commitments assumes top priority,” adds the source.

Deepika’s spokesperson confirmed the news.

If you ever thought that Bollywood star Deepika Padukone’s soaring success was a fluke, think again. It was 3am at Film City, Mumbai, and Padukone showed no signs of slowing down.

Clad in a heavy embellished fuschia ghagra [skirt], she was busy practising her moves along with her Ram Leela co-star Ranveer Singh. They had less than 24 hours before their grand performance at this year’s Zee Cine Awards on Saturday. The two will be dancing to their hit song Ang Lagaale from Ram Leela.

Anybody who’s somebody in Bollywood also knows that during live performances, dramatic entry is key to a good live act. A giant boat with a dragon head will ferry the couple onto the stage.
